RB Leipzig is set to part ways with coach Ole Werner. Martin Demichelis, a former Bayern player, is reportedly the top candidate to replace him. The rumors have been persistent, and now it seems that there is movement on the issue. Leipzig - Coach Ole Werner is apparently on his way out at RB Leipzig despite achieving all of the team's seasonal goals in just one year. According to media reports, the 45-year-old Argentinian Martin Demichelis is set to take over the team that finished third in the previous season. The former player and youth coach of FC Bayern Munich had been coaching Spanish first-division team RCD Mallorca since February with a contract initially set to expire at the end of the season. However, he recently extended his contract until 2028, apparently with an exit clause. There was reportedly dissatisfaction with Werner, who still has a contract with Leipzig until June 30, 2027, particularly among supervisory board chairman Oliver Mintzlaff and the global football department, which includes Jürgen Klopp and Mario Gomez. The new playing style implemented by Werner did not entirely convince them. Additionally, the team reportedly needed too much luck to qualify for the Champions League. Werner led Leipzig to a third-place finish with a newly assembled team on the offensive key positions. With 65 points, they missed their own Bundesliga record by just two points. In the summer, Leipzig had lost key players Xavi Simons, Loïs Openda, and Benjamin Sesko. Leipzig's sports director Marcel Schäfer had been willing to extend Werner's contract shortly after the successful Champions League qualification. However, in early June, the 41-year-old publicly backed down a bit and cited a still pending season analysis. This analysis is now apparently complete - with an unexpected outcome for Werner. Leipzig had paid around two million euros to Werder Bremen for Werner in the summer of 2025. Although the coach had only signed a two-year contract at the time, the intention was indeed a long-term collaboration. However, Werner was not the first choice for Leipzig. Cesc Fàbregas was initially supposed to be hired, but the Spaniard stayed with his club Como 1907 and led them to the Champions League in the previous season.
