RB Leipzig has appointed Martin Demichelis as the new head coach. The 45-year-old Argentine replaces Ole Werner, who had to leave despite qualifying for the Champions League. Demichelis is moving from RCD Mallorca to Leipzig after having taken over the coaching position only in March. The transfer is made possible by a release clause in his contract, the amount of which is not known. The management of Mallorca only learned about his departure through media reports. Demichelis was unable to save the club from relegation, yet he received a new long-term contract, which he is now leaving after less than three months, causing discontent in Palma. In Leipzig, Demichelis is seen as a bold step, reminiscent of Bayern's signing of Vincent Kompany. Whether he can replicate that success remains to be seen. The move also marks his return to Germany, where he previously played for Bayern Munich for eight years. After his playing career, he was an assistant coach in Munich and later took on various coaching positions in Argentina and Mexico. An official confirmation of the transfer is still pending, as Ole Werner is currently on vacation and is expected to speak with sporting director Marcel Schäfer next week.
