RB Leipzig completed the signing of U21 international Brajan Gruda from Brighton & Hove Albion on a loan with a mandatory purchase clause on Monday. The 22‑year‑old Croat returns after a successful winter loan and is expected to slot straight into the squad.
How did the deal materialise?
After intensive talks between Marcel Schäfer, Leipzig’s sporting director, and Brighton officials, a new loan agreement was sealed on July 5. The terms mirror the previous arrangement but now include a compulsory buy‑out that Leipzig can trigger at season’s end. Gruda already logged 13 Bundesliga appearances for the Saxons, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
Why is Gruda valuable for Leipzig?
The midfielder first joined the club in winter because he felt both on‑field and off‑field at home. His return plugs a creative gap created by departures and the arrivals of Rocco Reitz and Abdoul Koné. At the same time Leipzig must hit its internal target of over €100 million in revenue, and Gruda offers immediate quality without a hefty fee.
What does this mean for the current campaign?
Leipzig currently sit 3rd in the Bundesliga with 65 points from 34 games (20 wins, 5 draws, 9 losses) and a goal record of 66 scored, 47 conceded (+19). They trail leaders Bayern Munich by 24 points. The last result was a 4‑1 defeat to SC Freiburg on May 16 2026, and recent form (LLWWL) shows two wins and three losses in the last five matches. Gruda is expected to help stabilise the run and boost attacking output.
What’s next for Leipzig?
After the training start on Monday, Gruda is likely to feature in the opening match against FC Cologne. Coach Fabian Hürzeler stresses that quick integration is essential as the side battles for Champions‑League spots in the coming weeks. Meanwhile the management will continue scouting departures to meet the financial goal. Gruda’s return marks the first step in trying to turn the season around.
