RB Leipzig forward Assan Ouédraogo requires surgery after suffering another shoulder injury. The 20-year-old sustained a capsule injury in his right shoulder during the club's 5-0 home win over Hamburger SV last Sunday.
The club announced the diagnosis on Tuesday. Ouédraogo will be sidelined "until further notice," RB Leipzig stated, without providing a specific return timeline. The player had to be substituted in the 35th minute of the match against HSV. The victory lifted Leipzig to fifth place in the Bundesliga with six points.
Schäfer offers support
Sporting director Marcel Schäfer expressed his sympathy. "Assan has had so much bad luck with injuries in recent years and has always fought his way back," Schäfer said. He added, "We know how much work, will and passion Assan has invested in his comeback. We stand behind him as a club."
The injury is also a setback for the German national team. Ouédraogo will miss the upcoming Nations League matches under coach Jürgen Klopp. He was previously on standby for the last World Cup.
Injury woes continue
This is already the second capsule injury to the same shoulder during this pre-season for the youngster. He previously missed the entire preparation due to the same issue. He only made his comeback the week before in the 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como 1907. Prior to that, Ouédraogo was already sidelined for several months in the first half of the year and several weeks at the end of last year with a tendon injury in his left knee.
RB Leipzig must now handle upcoming fixtures without the talented attacker. The team's next match is away to seventh-placed Bayer Leverkusen on September 20. Leipzig will aim to maintain their recent form of three wins from their last five games.
