RB Leipzig's Maarten Vandevoordt will be the starting goalkeeper this season. The 24-year-old Belgian steps up from backup to first-choice keeper but keeps his number 26 jersey for good luck. "I played with 26 in Genk and it has followed me my whole career," Vandevoordt told BILD.
Why does Vandevoordt keep number 26?
Vandevoordt says the number has special meaning. "I debuted in the first team at 15 with this number and wore it ever since, even for my Champions League debut." He also respects Peter Gulacsi, who has worn number 1 in Leipzig for years. "There was no reason to change that."
How does Vandevoordt react to the coaching change?
After Martín Demichelis replaced Ole Werner, Vandevoordt is excited. "He's a nice guy, a world-class defender, and stands for intensity and passion," says the keeper. Vandevoordt isn't worried Demichelis might pick Gulacsi instead. "I played well last season and go into this one with confidence."
What does this mean for Gulacsi?
With Vandevoordt as number 1, 36-year-old club legend Peter Gulacsi moves to backup. Vandevoordt respects Gulacsi and looks forward to working with new coach Demichelis. For him, number 26 remains a symbol of luck and continuity.
